What a surprise LeBron James wins the 2008-2009 NBA MVP. And while this is not a shocker I did think Kobe Bryant earned a little more love than he got from the voters. But who am I kidding, James was going to take this one hands down.
Congrats to the man-boy! He is a amazing. I say man-boy because he is a stud but he still has a boyish charm and energy level. Don't forget he played last summer in the Olympic games.
Honestly I think he learned a lot from that experience. Alhthough he clearly had improved every year in his first 5 years in the NBA, he has taken his game to the Jordan esque level. Most notably his defense. I believe he has surpassed Kobe as the best all around player in the NBA. And that is not a knock on Mr. Bryant. He is still a factor in this league.
While we are on that subject. Dwayne Wade made an admirable run at MVP consideration. And in future seasons others like maybe Chris Bosh may rise to the MVP level. Or young rising stars like Chris Paul or Kevin Durant may make some MVP noise.
Back to the King now. To me the most remarkable chapter in this story is he is not a ball hog. Unlike the Kobe's. the AI's. or the D Wade's, James is a pass first player. Yes he gets his team involved first. If he needs to carry them he will, if they need a stop he gets it or he motivates his team to rise to the occasion and play championship level defense. He is their leader and a very unselfish player.
Scary part? He is going to get better! Yes let the "James" begin!
